He was born July 12, 1920, in Lexington, the son of James and Cora Mae Robbins Bright. He lived all of his life in Jefferson County and was a 1939 graduate of Lexington High School. He was in the U.S. Navy from July 1942 until December 1945 during World War II. He worked at the Goodyear Bag Plant in Charlestown early in life and then at Jefferson Proving Ground until 1972 before working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers until 1978 and then at Public Service of Indiana. He loved fishing, reading and what gardening the deer would allow. He was a member of the Kent-Schmidlap Masonic Lodge No. 408, the ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis and Madison VFW Post 1969. He attended Trinity United Methodist Church and also had attended Hanover United Methodist Church.
He is survived by one daughter, Julie Sparks of Madison; one son, Marvin Rodney Bright of Seminole, Fla.; one granddaughter; one grandson; four great- grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie L. Gray Bright, whom he married Nov. 28, 1948, and who died July 30, 2010; his parents; four brothers, Grant, William, Jesse and Robert Bright; and one sister, Florence Miller.
The funeral was at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre. Burial was in the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion conducted military honors at the cemetery chapel.
