Suggested edit: The son of Elias & Margaret (Dickenson or Dixon) Diem, in 1860 he was a carpenter living in Gap, Salisbury Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had black hair and hazel eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he served three terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Lancaster July 28, 1862, and mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. F, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry. Injuring his spinal column injury in a lifting accident, he was admitted to the hospital at Berlin, Maryland, and ultimately discharged the service by surgeon's certificate December 18, 1862, from the convalescent camp at Alexandria, Virginia. His surname is spelled "Diehm" in Bates' History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, the company register, and the muster roll.
2. Enlisted in Lancaster July 4, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis, mustered into state service at Harrisburg July 9 as a sergeant with Co. F, 47th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company August 13, 1863.
3. Enlisted and mustered into federal service at Lancaster March 2, 1865, as a private with Co. I, 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company January 31, 1866.
Either shortly before or after his first term of service, he married Lydia Ann Harrington and fathered Newton E. (b. @1864). Cause of his death is listed as "cancer of nose & chronic myocarditis" with "acute nephritis" a contributing factor. His surname is often spelled "Deam" or "Deem," suggesting its pronunciation.
