Lonnie Sanford was the fourth of five children born to Alonzo Orlando Sanford and Elizabeth Dorothy Zeigler Sanford. He lied about his age so that he could join the army with his brother, Emile, and serve in World War I. He was eventually reported 'missing in action, presumed dead.' His family was sitting on the front porch in Helena, Arkansas, one day soon after the war was over and saw a man walking down the street. One of them said that it looked like Lonnie - and it was him! That was how his family found out that he had survived the war.

Lonnie was a painter and worked with his father and brother in the family painting business, A. O. Sanford & Sons in Memphis. He died of pneumonia in 1957.
