Willis began his business career in Clinton, Iowa, in the grocery trade with partner Charles Curtis. In 1866 they purchase the woodworking company that would become Curtis Brothers, one of the longest lived companies in Clinton.

Shortly after Willis was bought out by the Curtis's, he went in to the canning business with his brother, Fred. A disastrous fire ended this venture and they shortly when into the furniture business, founding what eventually became Hemingway Furniture Company.
