A lifelong resident of Webster County, Hattie was raised on the family farm north of Guide Rock. She received her formal education attending rural school and the Guide Rock High School. She was united in marriage with Rudolphus "Dolph" Vaughan on September 11, 1920, and they made their home farming in the Guide Rock area. He preceded her in death on June 27, 1971. Hattie continued to live at home until she was 102, with the assistance of many of her neighbors, friends and family. After fracturing a hip, she moved to the Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud to live.
Hattie was a member of the Guide Rock United Methodist Church; the Ladies Auxiliary; and a number of organizations. In her leisure time she enjoyed doing fancywork She especially loved to embroider and crochet. She loved gardening flowers and vegetables, and at the age of 101, she spaded her garden, although she had promised one of the nieces she wasn't going to. Hattie was also a great cook, and her fried chicken dinners are especially memorable. Having the opportunity to travel, Hattie enjoyed trips to Colorado with her brother Arthur and his wife, Esther. Celebrating her birthdays milestones, she had received recognition from the Governor, the President; and as well as the media.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; a sister, Inez Ferguson; and two brothers, Arthur and Kenneth Hagan. Left to cherish Hattie's memory are her nieces, nephews, and many friends. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure to know her.
