Permelia was the daughter of Phillip and Eliza Eaton of Douglas County, Illinois. (Phillip was a civil war soldier). Married April 25, 1880 in Sadorus, Illinois to Alvin Van Houten, they had 6 children together- John Harvey, David L., Raymond E., Mary Lela, Viola "Dollie", and Frederick Silas Van Houten. They were married for 45 years.

OBITUARY (from "Danville Commercial News", Friday, March 13, 1925:
Mrs. Permelia VanHouten

Mrs. Permelia VanHouten, wife of Alvin VanHouten, teamster, died at the family residence, 303 Commercial Street, at 3:10 o'clock Thursday afternoon, after an illness of a year. She was born in Arcola, March 25, 1860, a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Phillip Eaton. She had made her home in this city the past 36 years. The husband and five of the nine children born to the union survive. They are Harvey, David, and Fred Van Houten, and Mrs. May Ford, and Mrs. Dollie Stanton, all residing in this city.
Funeral services will be held at the family residence at 2:30 o'clock Saturday afternoon.
The interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
