M. J. Chapman committed suicide at his home in Jennings township, last week.
Mr. Chapman has been a resident of Decatur County for many years and was held in general esteem.
Financial trouble was the cause of his rash act. The gold standard ruins men in all the walks of life. We had a talk with Mr. Chapman about one year ago and he then thought that times would soon begin to improve and said that he thought it a good time for a man to go in debt as the boom in times would help a man to pay out and meet his obligations.
Mr. Chapman took the last resort to escape pressing creditors. That honest men are brought to the verge of despair when unable to pay, is not to be wondered at, but it is foolish to destroy one's own life.
Martin was a Civil War veteran having served in Co. E 16th Ohio Infantry. He was married to Sarah A. Close on June 7, 1860.
