WEBSTER CITY Dean Monroe, 77, prominent longtime Webster City businessman, died Thursday, November 25, 2010 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Calvary Baptist Church, with Pastor Terry Davenport officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Foster Funeral and Cremation Center from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday and prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Graveside military rites will be conducted by American Legion Post # 191.
Dean Eldon Monroe, son of Arnold and Myrtle (Porter) Monroe, was born August 14, 1933 at Webster City. He received his education in Webster City schools graduating in 1951 from Lincoln High. On October 14, 1953, he married Valerie L. Frette. He served in the Army from 1953 to 1955, with the 190th Field Artillary in communications. Following his discharge, he worked at Franklin Manufacturing (Electrolux) for 10 years and worked part time learning typewriter repair. In 1967, he opened his own typewriter sales and service retail store. He attended many service training schools so he could give good service on the machines he would sell. At one time he owned 3 stores, Clarion, Iowa Falls and Webster City. He later sold the Clarion store and in December of 2009, he closed the Webster City store after 50 years of service to the community. He remained active in the Iowa Falls store.
He is survived by his wife, Valerie; daughters and son-in-law, Leila and Warren Webb of Marshalltown, IA; Laura Jordan of Redman, WA; sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Colleen Monroe of Jolley, IA; Keith and Sharon Monroe of Alden, IA; 9 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents and brother, William Monroe.
Dean attended Calvary Baptist Church, was a 60 year member of the Elmo Lodge # 62 I.O.O.F., secretary of the United Auto Workers Local # 442 for several years, was a former president of the Izaak Walton League, American Legion Post # 191, member of the Webster City SMID committee, enjoyed hunting (especially quail), enjoyed stockcar racing, was an avid trapshooter and attended many State and National Trapshooting Tournaments, was an active bowler on many different men's and couples bowling leagues, he loved farming in his spare time and helping his neighbors. He would attend farm auctions just for the fun of it, usually buying something he really didn't need. He loved spending time with his family and friends.
