Mrs. Bowen was born March 27, 1928, in Green Sea, S.C., daughter of the late James Emory and Katie Powell Pridgen.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Rex Albert Bowen; one brother, Robert Pridgen; five sisters, Clara Hardee, Vila Williams, Lillian Smith, Estilene Strickland and Allene Sharp.
Mrs. Bowen graduated from Lander University in Greenwood, S.C. and was a member of the women's varsity basketball team. She was a long time member of Rocky Ridge United Methodist Church, Concord and served as President of her Sunday school class and as a Methodist Youth Fellowship leader. She was a member of the Methodist Women Circle 1 for many years. She was active in community and civic organizations and served as a leader in Girl Scouts, Brownies and Cub Scouts. She participated in school PTO and Booster Club for twenty-three years. She was awarded the rank of Honorary Major by the NC 51st Air Force JROTC Squadron, Central Cabarrus High School. She served on the Board of Directors of the Cabarrus County Chapter of the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, Cabarrus County Department of Aging Advisory Board, Harrisburg Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, Community Goals Survey Advisory Board, Cabarrus/Rowan Metropolitan Planning Organization, Coltrane LIFE Center Building Committee, Cabarrus County Senior Center Site Selection Committee and the Senior Center Building Committee. She was a former member of Cabarrus Regional Chamber of Commerce, a charter member of Southwest Cabarrus Rotary club and a charter member of South Cabarrus County Republican Women. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Wright G. Campbell Chapter 181. Mrs. Bowen was a former mayor of the Town of Harrisburg and she also served several years on the Harrisburg Town Council. She worked on several projects helping bring needed services to the town.
Survivors include her daughters, JoAnn Chu and husband, David of Berwyn, PA, Judy Graham and husband, Mark of Charlotte; sons, Michael Bowen and wife, Janet of Greensboro, Gerald Bowen and wife, Bobbie of Harrisburg; four grandchildren, Adam Bowen, Alex Bowen, Michael Chu, Jeffrey Chu and step-grandson, Christopher Graham; two brothers, Ralph H. Pridgen and Earnest Lacy Pridgen of Cheraw, SC.
