Dorothy Dee Shears Barbour's gentle heart stopped beating on February 23, 2012, after living a full and rich 97 years.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00a.m., February 27, 2012, at IOOF Cemetery with Dr. Lavon Brown, Pastor Emeritus of the First Baptist Church, officiating.
Dee was born on June 20, 1914 in the east bedroom of the Norman house homesteaded by her grandfather George Newman Shears, a Union Civil War Veteran, shortly after the run. Her parents were Charles Irving Shears and Norma Beatrice Keswater Shears. She attended Jefferson Elementary School, graduated from Norman High School and attended the University of Oklahoma majoring in Journalism and minoring in Geology.
Dee worked in the advertising department of Kerr's Department Store in Oklahoma City for several years before marrying Robert Earl (Bob) Barbour on June 11, 1939. They enjoyed 59 wonderful years together.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church for over 50 years. She taught Sunday School for over 17 years, was active in the Women's Missionary Union and helped with Vacation Bible School. She was also active in Friendship International. Dee and Bob were very involved in the International Student Association at the University of Oklahoma where they became close to many students, especially Hitu Desai, of Chicago, who became a member of the family and enriched their lives enormously.
Dee was a co-leader of Girl Scout Troop 24, member of Coterie Book Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames, Mayflower Society, First Families of Cleveland County and in 2004 she and her sister Mildred Shears Schuster were the Grand Marshalls for the 89er Day Parade. She and her husband Bob played canasta for over 40 years with the same group of close friends.
If Dee had three passions outside of her family they were gardening, needle point, and art. She was a past president of the Tulip Garden Club and a member of the Council of Norman Garden Clubs. She was also a member of the Norman Art League.
Dee was preceded in death by her parents as well as her husband and sister, Mildred Shears Schuster.
She is survived by her son Joel Shears Barbour and wife Janice of Norman, daughters N. Margaret Barbour of Norman and Dee Anne Barbour Heaton and husband Joe of Edmond.
She has four grandsons Joel James Shears Barbour and John Robert Frost Barbour of Norman, Robert Adam Heaton of Edmond, and Joseph Andrew Heaton of Washington, D.C. Dee is also survived by her sister-in-law Edith Barbour Bray of Norman, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to thank Dr. Tom Merrill and especially all those who took care of our mother from Loving Care over the past several years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Benevolence Committee at the First Baptist Church of Norman.
