He was a graduate of University of Pennsylania and a Navy veteran of World War II. He retired as an art teacher with the Philadelphia school system and was a former fencing coach. He was a life member of St. Andrew's Society of Philadelphia and Royal Navy Pipers Society.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Caley Beatty; a son, Joh Beattyof Spruce Pine; two sisters, Lucile Marshall of Kinnelon, N.J., and Lois Schirrmeister of Vero Beach, Fla; and two grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Spruce Pine United Methodist Church, of which he was a member. The Rev. Everett Freeman will officiate.
