Jack was raised in Astoria in a logging family. He worked on the river boats that pulled logs up and down the Columbia River. He met his wife (Mary Loretta Welsh Bauman) on the river boats, where she worked as a cook.

They opened a restaurant called Boss Lunch in Portland on the river front in about 1930, which they operated for about 5 years. Mary cooked and Jack waited tables.

Some time in the 1950s, they moved to El Paso, TX. Mary was born and raised in Texas and always considered herself a Texan. Jack worked as a custodian at El Paso High School, eventually becoming the Head Custodian, until he retired. They lived in an apartment in the basement of the high school.
