Ira Joseph Driver, 92, a resident of 1275 Hillcrest Drive in Harrisonburg, passed away peacefully at his home under hospice care on Oct. 12, 2004.
A son of the late Ira Joseph and Katherine Shumate Driver, he was born on Aug. 27, 1912, in Mount Sidney, Va.
Mr. Driver graduated from Mount Sidney High School and Dunsmore Business College.
He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater, receiving the Purple Heart.
Mr. Driver, along with his brother, James, co-owned Mick-or-Mack Grocery Stores in Harrisonburg and Elkton. He was an avid
golfer and gardener, and a longtime member of Asbury United Methodist Church.
Mr. Driver was preceded in death by two wives, the former Virginia Mcllhany and Anne Hardesty.
Also preceding him in death were three brothers, Samuel, Harry and James Driver and one sister, Ethel Driver.
Surviving are three children, J. Milton Driver and wife, Kenni, of Piano, Texas, Katherine Driver Newbraugh and husband, John, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., and Robert H. Driver of Harrisonburg;
five grandchildren, Sarah Harmison, Kate Keefer, Robert J. Driver,
Samuel Collins and Stephanie Goetz; two greatgrandchildren, Michael Keefer and Leah Keefer; one brother, John Driver of Flint, Mich.; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. L. Douglas Hill officiating.
Burial will follow in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens.
Members of the family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Friday at Lindsey Funeral Home in Harrisonburg.
