His father, John Spencer was one of the first Puritan settlers of Hartford and died in 1682 aged about 44 yrs.. His mother (wife of John) having died just before the father, their children became orphans. Gerard, aged 14 yrs & his sister, Rebecca (aged 16 yrs), were placed in the care of their aunt, Hannah (Spencer) Brainard, who used the children's interest in John's estate. His sibling, Benjamin (11 yrs) was placed in the charge of Nicholas Noyes of Haddam, and sister Lydia (aged 10 yrs), who had a defective hand, was give 7 times more than her portion and the old cow. Grace aged 6 yrs), the youngest sibling, was placed in the care of her aunt, Rebecca
Kenard, wife of John Kennard. Grace also was given a cow and 5 times her portion. However, on Feb. 8, 1693, Grace chose her Uncle Nathaniel Spencer to be her Guardian.
