Gertrud Ida Heller, the daughter of Maria (Blashke) and Willibald Boehme, was born September 20, 1928 at Aussig, Czechoslovakia. She departed this life on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at the Webster County Community Hospital in Red Cloud, Nebraska.
Gertrud spent her early years in Czechoslovakia and in 1946, moved with her family to Germany. It was there that she met Charles Heller while he was serving in the Armed Forces. They were united in marriage on May 14, 1958, and in 1959, they moved to Veteran, Wyoming. Through the years, they lived in a number of Nebraska communities where Charles served as a school superintendent for various districts. In 1978, they moved to Guide Rock, where Charles was the superintendent until his retirement. Gertrud was a dedicated wife and care-giver for Charles following his stroke, and he preceded her in death on April 30, 2004. Gertrud was diagnosed with Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinena, a rare form of cancer, and bravely fought the disease for fifteen years.
She was an expert seamstress, a gift she was taught by her mother. She also enjoyed knitting, embroidery work and crocheting and especially loved to share her work with others, donating to shelters and schools. She embraced her German heritage and worked as a teacher's aide in the Guide Rock and Lawrence schools in their German language programs. She especially loved working with the kids. She possessed a green thumb and enjoyed working with her flowers. Her personality was pervaded by her generosity and concern for those around her. Gertrud maintained a lifelong love for her homeland, Germany. She loved sharing stories about Germany and pursued German antiques and history.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Charles; a daughter, Heide, on January 16, 1990; and three brothers.
Left to treasure her memory are her children, Gabriele Runge and husband Dan of Kearney, Nebraska; Belle Williams of Gibbon, Nebraska; Anne-Marie Ohmstede and husband Bruce of Guide Rock, Nebraska; and Eric Heller and wife Sandee of Guide Rock; 5 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; a niece, Renate Boehme and husband Frank of Leipzig, Germany; other relatives and friends.
