Penny was a very athletic and energetic dog. Seeing her run was like watching poetry in motion. In spite of our efforts to discourage her from doing so, Penny had no trouble at all escaping from the yard. Even still, she would always return to the house after her excursions around the neighborhood. A few hours later, we would find her curled up on the porch waiting for us to let her back in.
Penny was a fabulous watch dog. Nothing escaped her attention. It was impossible for anyone to get close to the house without her knowing about it, regardless of how stealthily they approached. She was a fiercely loyal, protective and loving dog.
Penny was also quite the hunter - with a rather unfortunate affinity for skunks. More than once, Penny would come running into the house after having been soundly sprayed by a skunk she had pursued. While most dogs would shy away from the smell of a skunk, Penny considered skunk scent the olfactory equivalent of ringing the dinner bell. These encounters would render our house almost uninhabitable for long periods as we worked tirelessly to rid our domicile of the skunk smell that Penny seemed to find so appealing.
In spite of Penny's protective nature, she was always gentle and friendly to family and friends who came over. She was also gentle with our cats. Even while helping us "herd" our cats to keep them out of places they didn't belong, she loved the cats and never did anything to hurt them.
Finally, after 14 years of a happy and fulfilling life, Penny succumbed to a deteriorating and debilitating illness that finally led up to our having to make the ultimate expression of love to free her from her pain and misery.
Like all our animals, Penny was a loved and cherished member of our family and there are simply no words – no language that can adequately communicate our grief and sense of loss.
We will always love you, Penny!
