Among those associations which are the adjunct to progressive civilization may be noticed those in which Mr. A. L. Bateman is engaged.
Mr. Bateman is a native of Hamilton, Ohio, where he was born in 1837. After completing his literary education he went to California in1852, where he was engaged in mining operations for a period of ten years, and returned to Indiana in 1868.
October 21, 1861 he enlisted in the 3rd Regiment California Infantry, in which he served three years, chiefly at Salt Lake City and at Fort Bridger, Wyoming Territory, receiving an honorable discharge at the expiration of his term of service, at Camp Douglas, near Salt Lake City.
He then took up telegraphy, at which he has been engaged ever since.
In 1874 he was appointed post-master at this place, which position he still acceptably and efficiently fills.
He also holds the position of telegraph operator and railroad agent for this place, as well as agent for Adams Express Co.
Mr. Bateman, in his long association with the business and civil affairs of this section, has contributed in no small degree to the welfare and progressive interests of this section of the county.
BATEMAN, AARON L. On 1890 list from Sand Creek Township with 1 child under 16 years of age. Enlisted in Civil War October 21, 1861, California, I 3rd, honorable discharge from Camp Douglas. Born in 1837, died 1894, tombstone at Springer Cemetery.
