Francis Pope was the son of William Marion "Bill" and Josephine Cook Pope. He was the brother of William Casty Pope and Clara Pope Henson, and was a native of Haywood County, NC. He was a veteran of World War I, serving in France and Winningen, Germany in the 56th Pioneer Infantry, Headquarters Division of the US Army. Married to Floy D. Clontz in 1920, they raised 9 children: Luther Grey ("LG"), Helen, Glenn, Hilda ("Sissy"), Earl, Charles, Frank, Robert, and Nancy. He was a Champion Paper and Fibre Company Old Timer, working at the Canton Mill for many years. He was a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He passed away after several strokes in 1976.
