Howard Edward Custer, 60, a resident of 1221 Whitmore Shop Road, Harrisonburg, died April 25, 2004, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient for the past week.
Mr. Custer was born on Feb. 13, 1944, and was the son of the late Wade H. and Ruby Gladwell Custer.
He worked for Highway Motors and Hartman Motors for 27 years. He also worked at Harrisonburg Honda for six years until his health would no longer allow him to work.
He was an avid Redskins fan, avid hunter and enjoyed playing softball. He was a member of the Mount Clinton Church of God.
On June 5,1965, he married the former Marie Sine, who died Aug. 13, 1975. On May 19, 1990, he married the former Elizabeth Taylor, who survives.
Also surviving are a daughter, Tina Marie Custer and her friend, Dwight Bollman; a son, Gerald Wayne Custer and his wife, Sue, Timberville; a sister, Zelma Keene and her husband, Carl, Harrisonburg; one brother, Roy S. Custer, Mount Clinton; a sister-in-law, Nancy S. Custer, Clover Hill; two stepgrandchildren, Blake Miller and Brynn Miller.
The Revs. Jesse Booth, Kenneth Barnes, Wayne Powell, Wayne Taylor, and Roger Chandler will conduct a funeral service Thursday at 2 p.m. at the McMullen Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will follow at Mount Clinton Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 until 9 at the McMullen Funeral Home, Harrisonburg.
Friends may also call at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Taylor, 35 Betts Road, Harrisonburg, where Mrs. Custer will be staying until after the funeral service.
