A coroner's jury recommended that police further probe the death in the belief that Florville was murdered. It previously had been believed he committed suicide. He died of peritonitis which developed from a rifle bullet wound in his chest. He was shot the night of December 23 at his home and lay there all night until morning when he was able to get to his brother Oakland Florville's home. The brother testified that William repeated several times that "they got me" but would not name his assailants except to term them "the gang".
