Luther Laurence "Laurie" Pratt died Nov. 28, 2010, of natural causes at his home in Carlton.

Laurie was born April 1, 1923, in Portland, the son of Luther Laurence and Susie (Smith) Pratt. Laurie graduated from Eugene High School in 1940 and then went on to study organ with John Stark Evans at the University of Oregon.

Laurie was a staunch pacifist and when he was drafted during World War II, he chose alternative service in the Civilian Public Service. He was stationed in forest service camps throughout the Northwest. The friendships he forged with his fellow conscientious objectors lasted all his life.

After the war, Laurie resumed his musical education at Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., before returning to Oregon where he continued his work as a church musician, singer, and private music teacher. He was an adjunct professor at several local colleges and universities including Portland State University, Linfield College, and Clark College in Vancouver, where he stayed on the staff for 27 years. He became manager and buyer of all choral, piano, and organ music at Burke-Hoyt, one of Portland's leading music companies, and continued working in sheet music stores for many decades. He founded and/or directed many community choruses and was in demand as an accompanist for major performers throughout the area. Laurie was a lifelong member of the American Guild of Organists. He became minister of music at Portland's First Christian Church in 1952 and continued to serve that congregation for 57 years.

Laurie was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Priscilla. He is survived by his wife, Greta Nightengale of Carlton; daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa and Greg Stephens of Sherwood; Rebecca Pratt and Richard Hall of Tualatin; and Deborah Alysoun and Kim Lewis of West Linn; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 6, 2010, in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, 7961 N.E. Highway 99W, McMinnville, OR 97128. In lieu of flowers, please send memorial contributions in Laurie's name to the Hekimian fund at First Christian Church, Portland, in care of Macy & Son Funeral Directors.
