Romeo Wilson Ainsworth was born in Shenandoah, Iowa, the small town where his parents lived for a few years before moving on to Idaho. His parents, Romeo Wilson Ainsworth and Grace Rush Campbell were both born in Howard county, Missouri, descendents of early Missouri settlers. After his father died in Idaho, he went to San Francisco to visit his brother, Herbert, and decided to remain. In California he began using the name, Roy.

After retiring from Barrett Transportation Company in 1968, he and his wife, Pearl, sold their home in Palo Alto and moved to a small house on Angels Creek near Murphys, California, in the heart of the Mother Lode. Roy loved his new life and became a real booster for his adopted community. He joined the Murphys Community Club and Calaveras Senior Citizens, and was voted "Citizen of the Year" in 1973 by the MCC, for his many accomplishments in the area. In 1985, Roy and Pearl celebrated 50 years of marriage at a memorable occasion surrounded by many friends and relatives in Murphys.
