Wm J Hemphill Summoned by Death, prominent citizen of this city, died at the residence of Charles Price on E Sate St at 12:15 o'clock today after an illness of several months. Born Amboy... early life there. Began railroad career in 1872 in Peoria with the T.P.&W. railway... apprenticeship at machinists trade. 1876 Rawlings WY under R.M. Galbraith (father E.F. and Oliver of this city) until 1887 when he came to Jacksonville... Superintendent of Jacksonville Southeeastern shiops until 1897. Accepted position with St Louis, Peoria & Northern RW... in St Louis manager Evans & Howard Fire Brick company.
In Jacksonville alderman from Third ward 1893-1895, under mayor Henry Schoenfield.
Married Ida J Smith 1888 whom he met while she was visiting her sister in Rawlings. Her death was a blow from which he never fully recovered. One son, Chester, and two sisters in Peoria - Mrs. Minnie Noland and Mrs. A. M. Morton survive.
Member Jacksonville lodge No 570 A.R. and A.M... and Hospitaler Commandery No. 31 Knights Templar.
Funeral services at Charles L. Price home Thurs 10 o'clock. Interment Diamond Grove.
