Joseph Abraham Keans, son of Abrahmam Kearns and Mary Ann Behtol Kearns volunteered 3 Sep 1861 in Co E, 43 Regiment Indiana Volunteers. He was take prisoner in April 1864. At that time, the 43rd Indiana was engaged in one of the Bayou Expeditions along the Yazoo River on the northern flank of Vicksburg in an attack on Fort Pemgerton at Greenwood , Mississippi. After being taken prisoner, Joseph was taken to Camp Ford, Tyler, Texas and was held there for ten months. After being released, he returned home to Eaton, Preble County, Ohio where he died of pneumonia on 25 Mar1865. He died from health conditions incurred while being held as a prisoner at Camp Ford.
