James Frank "Jim" Arnold

GATE CITY, Va. - James (Jim) Frank Arnold, 89, of the Yuma community, went to be with the Lord Sunday (Nov. 21, 2004) at his home on Possum Creek.

Mr. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Rosa Arnold; his twin sister, Rosa Brown; sister, Velva Shoemaker Smith; brothers, Clay and Ireland Arnold; great-great-grandson, Ronnie Kelly Pierson.

Mr. Arnold was born in Clinchport, Va., on June 22, 1915. He married the beautiful Lissie Rivers (Bartlett) on Nov. 14, 1936 in Gate City, Va. After retiring from the Tennessee Eastman Company in 1979, he spent much of his time buying and selling cattle. Fishing and trapping were two of his great loves and he did both as often as he could. He was a devoted customer of McGee's Restaurant for well over 50 years, eating breakfast there nearly everyday until he was no longer able. Even then he had it brought to him.

Surviving are his loving wife, Lissie; son, James Wayne Arnold and wife Phyllis of Yuma, Va.; daughter, Norma Jean McClellan and husband Richard (Dick) of Kingsport; four grandchildren, Tammy Spencer and husband Ross of Mt. Morris, Mich., Jeffery Arnold and wife Twilla of Yuma, Va., Tracey Pierson and husband William of Church Hill, and Diana (Dee Dee) Baker and husband Vance of Blountville; eight great-grandchildren, Aaron Pierson and wife Jessica, Alicia Spencer, Matthew Pierson and wife Kelli, James (Jess) Spencer, Katie Baker, Jeffery Arnold Jr., Stephen Arnold and Amanda Baker; two great-great-grandchildren, Morgan Shae Pierson and Bryan Matthew Pierson, and one unborn great-great-grandson, Deacon Pierson.

He is also survived by a sister, Bertha Ellis and husband John (J.W.) of Swartz Creek, Mich.; a brother, Walter Arnold; three sisters-in-law, Anna Marie McCann of Kingsport, Gladys Hicks and husband Jack of Jonesborough, and Luria Mae Tate of Yuma, Va.; brother-in-law, Robert G. Bartlett Jr. of St. Petersburg, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and many dear friends.

The family would like to say a special thank you to Richard Slaight, Hospice Chaplain, who led Mr. Arnold to the Lord on Oct. 15, 2004 at Wellmont Hospice, and Dr. Cynthia Poortenga.

Calling hours are from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Scott County Funeral Home, Weber City, Va., and other times at the home on Route 7, Box 2821, Yuma, Va.

Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Wrightly Salling officiating.

The committal service will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Holston View Cemetery. Anyone wishing to attend may gather at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be his great-great-grandchildren, Aaron Pierson, Matthew Pierson, James Spencer, Jeffery Arnold Jr., Stephen Arnold, William Pierson and Vance Baker.

Honorary pallbearers will be Ralph McClellan, Ray Hartgrove, James McGee, Gus Carter, Harley Ball, Dee Meade, Pete Barbour and all the ladies at McGees Restaurant.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Wellmont Hospice, 280 Steeles Road, Bristol, Tenn., the Weber City Volunteer Fire Dept., P.O. Box 2263, Weber City, Va., or the Scott County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1088, Gate City, Va.
