Traer Star Clipper, Friday, April 20th, 1917 page 1

William Scharfenberg died at his home in Traer last Sunday. Our last issue made brief mention of the fact that he had been stricken with paralysis, Thursday evening. He did not rally, in fact gradually failed the two days following and passed quietly and peacefully away the third day. For more than thirty years Mr. Scharfenberg has been Traer's leading mason and has also been one of our most active and useful citizens.

He was born in Germany December 31, 1850 and was therefore in his sixty-seventh year. He married Johanna Schrader in Germany, June 2, 1882. The same day the couple sailed for the new world. They located first in Illinois, proceeding to Traer a few months later, arriving here March 7, 1883, and all the years since have been passed in this city.

Nine children have been born to them, seven of whom are living as follows: Anna and Fritz, in Traer; Emma Keith, of Rouleau, Canada; Paullina Brokaw, Tensleep, Wyoming; Olga, Cedar Rapids; Will and Raymond, at home. All were present at the funeral, with three grandchildren.

Mr. Scharfenberg served for three years in the army in Germany, of which he was proud. He also learned his trade in the old country. He was one of Tama county's best tradesmen and was always crowded with work. He did things well and endeavored to be honest. In his work as well as all his business dealings. He was a man of honor. None stood higher. This is attested to by the large assemblage of friends who were at the funeral, held Wednesday afternoon at the home. It was in charge of Rev. A. W. Miles and the Knights of Pythias, of which the deceased was a member, were present in a body and conducted the exercises at the cemetery. Mr. Scharfenberg was a member of the German Lutheran church. The body rests in Buckingham cemetery.
