The reign of the Guangxu Emperor began in 1875 and ended by his death in 1908. But in practice, his reign ended in 1898, after the Empress Dowager Cixi staged a coup and placed him under house arrest, ending the Hundred Days' Reform. The failed movement was the Emperor's last major attempt in reforming the institutions of the failing Qing Dynasty. The Emperor died one day before the death of Cixi, believed to have been poisoned by the Empress Dowager. (read less)
