Haydenville, Nov. 30 – John E. Gilbert, husband of Mrs. Lena (LaFoe) Gilbert of Mountain St., died this morning in the Soldiers' Home in Holyoke. Mr. Gilbert was born in Malone, N.Y., April 5, 1896, son of Burton and Sara (Boyer) Gilbert. He received his early education in the schools of Malone and later in the schools of Providence, R. I. He was a general contractor and worked in this capacity until his illness forced him to retire.
He was a veteran of World War I, having enlisted in the U.S. Army with Co. I, Yankee Division. He was engaged in active service in France having participated in the battles of Chateau-Thiery and Marne, and Marne, and was a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross. He was discharged in April 1919, and in June of that year married Lena LaFoe of Florence whom he leaves. Most of their married life was spent in Providence, R. I. returning to this area to make their home in Haydenville, nine years ago. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Mary's Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Francis H. of Northampton, and one grandchild; two brothers, Henry and Frank J., both of Narragansett, R.I.; five sisters, Mrs. Harry Dickens, of Ellington, R.I., Mrs. Francis Wilh of Providence, Mrs. George Pequin of Malone, N.Y., Mrs. Florence Pequin of St. Albans, Vt., and Mrs. Louis Roberts of Northampton; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at the Mansfield funeral home, Monday morning at 8.15 followed by a high mass and requiem at St. Mary's at 9. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery at Leeds. Friends may call at the funeral home from Saturday noon to the time of the funeral.
