Jack D. Bowers, 78, of Alexandria, died Nov. 18, 2010, at Elmcroft of Muncie after an extended illness.

He was born Sept. 4, 1932, in Alexandria to Rudolph Bowers and Edith (Jones) Bowers. He resided in Alexandria most of his lifetime.

Jack grew up on the family farm, milking cows and riding in pony races. He graduated in 1950 from Alexandria High School, where he participated in basketball, baseball, track, drama and many other school activities. He graduated from Butler University in Indianapolis, in 1954, with a bachelor's degree in mathematics, chemistry and physics. Later he earned his master's degree, principal's license, superintendent's license and guidance director's certification from Ball State University in Muncie. He served with the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1957. He began his teaching career at School 35 in Indianapolis.

Returning from the service, he taught at Wood Junior High School in Indianapolis. Returning to Madison County, Jack taught physics and served as a counselor at Anderson High School. In 1965, he accepted the position of assistant principal at Alexandria-Monroe High School, where he stayed for the next 23 years. In addition, he served as principal of the high school and then superintendent of Alexandria Community School Corporation. Following retirement, Jack was elected as Monroe Township Trustee from 1994 to 1998. He was a member of the Madison County Retired Teachers Association, the Alexandria Lions Club, the Alexandria Elks Lodge 478, the Alexandria Eagles 1771, and the Alexandria American Legion-Post 87. He has been an active member of Alexandria First United Methodist Church and was a life member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Survivors include his wife, Teena (Overpeck) Bowers, whom he married July 17, 1955; daughters, Sally (Mark) Wright of Pendleton and Kay (Jack) Lazar of Kokomo; son, Bruce (M.J.) Bowers of Richmond, Ohio; five grandchildren, Aubrey (Jeremy) Jordan, Derek Wright, Rachel Lazar, Jack Lazar, Christopher Gooderl; sister, Jean Ann Walker of Fort Myers Beach, Fla.; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services honoring Jack's life will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, in the First United Methodist Church, 116 W. Broadway, Alexandria, with Dr. Joyce Thornton officiating.

Interment will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Alexandria, with military honors provided by Elwood VFW 5782 Honors Team.
