Hazel M. Aaen, 92, of Yankton, SD formerly of Volin, SD died Wednesday, February 4 at the Avera Sister James Care Center in Yankton.

Hazel was born September 1, 1916 near Eagle Butte, SD to Tore and Eline Agholt Aaen, She was baptized in the Lutheran faith in Brandon, SD, and following the loss of there mother during the 1918 flu epidemic, she moved with her sisters to Bethesda Children's Home in Beresford, SD. In 1931, she made her home with her sister Edna, and graduated from Volin High School in 1935.

Hazel was a mother's helper for several Volin area families, and was an active member of the Volin Lutheran Church and WELCA. She spent time on lawn work, flowers and baking cookies to share when friends and family came for coffee.

She moved to the Majestic Bluffs Assisted Living in 2004, and later to the sister James Care Center.

Hazel is survived by her sister Lillian Olson of Mission Hill, SD seven nieces and several great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Agnes Skaane and Edna Oursland and her brother Edward Aaen.

Funeral service will be 1:30 pm Saturday, February 7 at the Faith United Lutheran Church rural Volin, SD with burial to follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery rural Vermillion, SD. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
