Alice Foster was born to James Garner Roberts and Luella Lucinda (Carter) Roberts in Mobile County, Alabama. Her family lived on a farm when she was young.

Granny was a schoolteacher before she married Harley Chessy Foster on June 26, 1925. They had three daughters: Genevieve "Genny," Alice Lanelle "Nell," and Delores "Fritzie." When her daughters were in their teens, Granny Foster went to work at the shipping docks in Mobile Bay and worked there until retirement. In their later years Granny and Granddaddy left Mobile for Florida, first to Stuart for a brief period, then to Delray Beach, to be near two of their daughters.

Granny Foster was one of the sweetest, kindest, gentlest souls on earth. Her hair turned completely white fairly early in her life.

Granny had eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren, some of whom she met before her death, and great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband Harley, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter Cynthia Ann "Cindy" (Clark) Thompson.
