Mattie Bernice Lockard, daughter of Henry Augusta and Nellie Olive Westby Hedlund, was born June 28, 1918 in Oskaloosa. Mattie attended a country school in Mahaska County, where she graduated from eighth grade. Mattie married Arthur Dee Lockard January 29, 1938 in Lancaster, Missouri. Both were raised in Oskaloosa and grew into their golden years in Oskaloosa. Mattie met Art when she was very young at a box lunch auction, Art bought her and her brother a box lunch and the story grew from there. Mattie gave her life to her family and was a very devoted and attentive mother. Mattie resided at Crystal Heights for several years before residing at the Oskaloosa Care Center for the last two years. Mattie so loved all the people who touched her life, your love goes with her. Thank you all at the Oskaloosa Care Center for your love and support, Iowa Hospice for your help in our time of need, Joyce Schlarbaum for your special touch and Crystal Heights Care Center for years of companionship and care. Mattie leaves behind two sons: Keith (Mildred) Lockard of New London, Iowa and Charles Lockard of Beacon; a daughter, Cindy (Steven) Reeves of Fremont; seven grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Mattie was preceded in death by her husband, Art on July 7, 1996; a daughter, Jane; a grandson, Brian; and four brothers: Donald, Dewight, Vern and Max.
