Charles Irvine enlisted in the 14th Virginia Cavalry, CSA in Lexington in 1862. He was wounded in action at Brandy Station in 1863. He became a butcher, saloon keeper and hotel owner in Lexington, Virginia. Source: Robert J. Driver Jr.'s excellent book, 14th Virginia Cavalry, 1988, H.E. Howard, Inc., Lynchburg, VA., page 138.

"My father was severely wounded at Brandy Station. He was invalided at home and was unable to return to active service." MR says this info came from an approved UDC application of his daughter, Gertrude and adds the census below.

1880 Lexington, Rockbridge, VA US Federal Census includes Charles W. Irvine, Age: 35, VA born, a married white male, Spouse's Name: Margaret E. Irvine, Father's Birthplace: PA, Mother's Birthplace: VA, plus Charles W. Irvine 35; Margaret E. Irvine 31; William A. Irvine 13; Lacy L. Irvine 10; Gertie L. Irvine 4 and Nellie G. Irvine 2.

His obituary on the right was published in the Lexington Gazette, Lexington, Virginia, 26 Sept 1900.
