Steve, Jr. died in a rural house fire. The house belonged to his sister-in-law, Sarah Francis (Clay) Scott. The newspaper account of the tragedy said he was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery the next day.
In 2009, a marker was placed by Scott family descendants, on the presumed location of Steve Jr.'s burial, beside his father.
