Herbert Ross Atwood, Jr. (Rocky) passed away on December 3, 2010, in Houston, Texas, at age 54. He was born in Baytown, Texas to proud parents Betty and Herbert Atwood on May 3, 1956. He graduated from Coldspring High School and Sam Houston State University, where he was active in the Bearkat Marching Band and Kappa Kappa Psi fraternity. Past employers include River Oaks Bank, Southwest Bank of Texas, and Amegy Bank, where he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. Rocky's passion for music was matched only by his talent. An accomplished pianist, organist and percussionist, he performed at many churches, including Resurrection MCC, Bering Memorial United Methodist Church, and Metropolitan Baptist Church, as well as with Houston Concert Band and various other groups. Accomplishments and activities include: Past President of the JHA Users Group, Board of Directors of the Cloverdale Foundation, Past President of EPAH (Executive Professional Association of Houston), Past President of the PWA Holiday Charities, Active Member of The Empire of the Royal Sovereign and Imperial Court of the Single Star, and Member of the Texas Gay Rodeo Association.
Rocky's charismatic personality and infectious laugh will be remembered by all who knew him. He is survived by his mother, Betty Atwood, of Coldspring, TX; daughter Amanda Leigh Atwood and son Andrew Ross Atwood of Cypress, TX; former spouse Sharon Lieder Atwood of Cypress; Sister-in-Law and Brother-in-Law, Lise and Phil Miller of Kerrville, TX; niece Jordan Miller of Kerrville; Sister-in-Law Stacy Lieder of Austin, TX; Mother-in-Law and Father-in-Law, Jean and Lee Lieder of Cypress; friend Greg Davis of Houston; friend Allen Balla of Houston; numerous cousins and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Atwood, Sr.
A celebration of Rocky's life will be held on Saturday, December 11th at 2:00 PM at Resurrection MCC Church, 2025 West 11th Street in Houston, with a reception immediately following. To celebrate his legacy of generosity, memorial donations may be made in his honor to: PWA Holiday Charities, PO Box 66849, Houston, TX 77266; Resurrection MCC Food Pantry, 2025 W. 11th Street, Houston, TX 77008; or PFLAG HATCH Youth Scholarship Foundation, P.O. Box 667010, Houston, TX 77266. He left an indelible imprint on our hearts, and he will be greatly missed.
