Mary Jane was born in Dallas on June 29, 1917, the daughter of Jack I. and Kate Patillo Coffing. She grew up in Highland Park, attended Hockaday, a private school for young women, and went on to get a degree at what she proudly referred to as "The University," the University of Texas. Mary Jane returned to Dallas to pursue a career as a legal assistant.
Her love of horses led her from her home and career in Dallas to that of a rancher and homemaker in Palo Pinto. She met Emry Birdwell at the Texas Cowboy Reunion in Stamford in 1948. They married in 1949 and had two sons, Emry Birdwell Jr. and Jack Birdwell.
Mary Jane's interests were diverse. She had a keen sense of justice and a deep respect for the laws, legal system and government of our country. Mary Jane was a figure to be reckoned with in Palo Pinto County and the state of Texas when it came to property rights, taxation issues and the use of taxpayer monies. She promoted the youth of Palo Pinto County through her public support of the Livestock Association and 4-H activities. Privately and anonymously, Mary Jane provided scholarships and tuition monies for young women in financial need. She was a member of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. She was also a member of Hockaday Alumni.
Survivors: Sons, Emry Birdwell Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Mineral Wells and Jack Birdwell and his wife, Billie, of Palo Pinto; grandchildren, Jay Birdwell of Palo Pinto, Kyle Birdwell of Brownwood, Lindsey Birdwell of Texas A&M and Kendall Zanowiak of Mineral Wells; sister-in-law, Charlotte Coffing of Jacksonville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
