John Handley was born 1746, Augusta County, Virginia, the son of William Handley and Margaret Henderson. John had three siblings: Nancy Handley, Samuel Carroll Handley and Margaret Handley.

John married Mary Harrison about 1768, and they had twelve children: William Handley, Samuel Handley, John Handley, Jr., Margaret Handley, Alexander Handley, James Handley, Archibald Handley, Nancy Handley, Sarah Handley, Elizabeth "Betsy" Handley, Walker Handley and Isaac Handley.

Revolutionary War, DAR ancestor #A050993, and War of 1812. John died in Monroe County, Virginia (now West Virginia).
