LAKE ELSINORE LEONARD EDWARD VIERLING Leonard Edward Vierling passed away on September 17, 2010 in Riverside. He was born November 18, 1922 in Batesville, Indiana. He was the third of six children born to Elmer and Mary Bockover Vierling. He attended school in Batesville and Seymour, Indiana. He enlisted in the Army before WWII and served two years in Panama before volunteering for the Airborne Infantry. He deployed as a replacement in the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the famed 101st Airborne Division and was part of the push into the Ruhr Pocket. His unit was the first to occupy Adolf Hitler's Eagle's Nest in Berchtesgaden, near the Austrian border. Leonard was consulted in the making of HBO's "Band of Brothers" as he was a radio operator for one of the officers depicted. He was a life member of the VFW, the 101st Airborne Division Association and the 506th Parachute Infantry Association. After the war he returned to Indiana and married Hazel Laura Caroline Schutte who preceded him in death on January 27, 2006. Hazel was born to Herman and Lena Ludeker Schutte on March 21, 1926. They moved to San Bernardino in 1964 where their children completed school and Lenny went to work for TRW where he retired in 1984. On Retirement they moved to Lake Elsinore to spend the rest of their lives. They volunteered at a local food bank until age and illness prevented it. They are survived by sons James(Sandra) of Whitehall, PA and Keith(Beverly) of Lake Elsinore. Grandsons Bryon(Daria) of Seattle, WA, Kenneth (Julie) of Welsboro, PA, Kris (Tanya) of Emmaus, PA, Jason(Sonja) of Murrieta, Eric(Jeanie) of Irvine and Andrew of Lake Elsinore. Great Grandchildren Kile, Thorrin, Del, Angelique, Kyriana and Aidan. Leonard is also survived by brothers Robert of Florida and Victor of Seymour, Indiana and sisters Martha( Gloria) Elmquist of Ridgecrest and Shirley McCasslin of Seymour, Indiana. Hazel is survived by sisters Alma Vierling and Eileen Stirn of Batesville, Indiana, Wanda Amberger of Morris, Indiana, and brother Robert of Oldenburg, Indiana. Nephews and nieces too numerous to list. Lenny and Hazel will be inurned at Riverside National Cemetery on October 1
