FR. CARROLL WARNER

WASHINGTON, D.C.-Fr. Carroll Warner, OFM Cap., 88, died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, at Providence Hospital in Washington after a short illness.

Born in East Pittsburgh, Pa., on Aug. 3, 1910, Fr. Carroll was the son of the late Lawrence E. Warner and Nellie Scanlon Warner, and was a member of St. William Parish in East Pittsburgh.

Fr. Carroll attended St. Fidelis Seminary in Herman, Pa., from 1924-1930, entering the Capuchin Franciscan Order and professing temporary vows in 1931. He was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop John McNamara of the Archdoicese of Washington, on June 9, 1936, at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington.

For the first nine years of his priesthood, Fr. Carroll worked as a Catechetical instructor for outstation missions of St. Mary's Parish in Herman. This assignment was followed by almost 40 years of parish work in Wheeling, W.Va., Atwood and Victoria, Kan., Cresaptown, Md., Rochester and Pittsburgh, Pa., and Roswell, Ohio. Known for his gentle presence, his keen sense of humor and quiet prayerfulness, Fr. Carroll was ideal as a steady presence among the student friars in Washington from 1973-1976 and again in his retirement years since 1988.

There was a special visitation and prayer service for Fr. Carroll at Capuchin College, Washington, on Wednesday, Jan. 27, at 4:30 p.m. His body was then taken to Pittsburgh where public viewing is possible on Thursday, Jan. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Augustine Friar Chapel, 221 - 36th St. in the Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh. The friars and friends of Fr. Carroll will celebrate a wake service at 8 p.m. at the friary.

Fr. Paul Kuppe, OFM Cap., Provincial Minister of the Capuchin Franciscan Province of St. Augustine, will celebrate a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 29, at St. Augustine Worship Site of Our Lady of the Angels Parish, 37th Street, Pittsburgh, Pa. Br. Paul Dressier, OFM Cap. is the homilist.

Burial will follow at the friars' plot of St. Augustine Cemetery, Millvale, Pa.

Fr. Carroll was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William, in 1987.

He is survived by his brother, Paul G. Warner, Washington; and three sisters, Doctor Mary P. Warner, Hagerstown, Md., Rosella Spilman, Bethesda, Md., and Joan Kelly, Falls Church, Va.
