Sir John married Joan Arches, the daughter of Sir Richard Arches of Buckinghamshire and Joan Arden, daughter of Sir Giles and the heiress and sister of John Arches. They were married before 12 July 1434 and had four sons and four daughters:

Sir John was with the King (Henry VI) in France in 1430 and 1431, presented to the church of Dunterton in 1434, and to the chantry at Hemyock in 1442. In 1444, the Abbot of Hartland charged him with breaking into the Abbot's close and house at Stoke St Vectan and taking horse, cattle and sheep
