Man, Wife, Grandson And Teen-Ager Die
A headon crash killed a Remington couple, their grandson and a rural Remington teen-ager about 10 p.m. Monday.
Dead are Andrew A. Medley, 55; his wife, Henrietta, 52; a grandson, Randy Lee Medley, 10; and Harold Lee "Dick Hall, 18, all of Rout 2, Remington.
State police said the Medleys were believed returning from the opening night of the Jasper County Fair when their car was struck by the Hall car, apparently traveling at high speed.
Force of the impact pushed the Medley car 59 feet backward into a third car driven by Morris W. Moore, 63, of Route 2, Remington.
Sandra Jane Medley, sister of the dead boy, was taken to Jasper County Hospital, Rensselaer, with a fractured leg and multiple lacerations, then transferred to Home hospital, Lafayette. She was reported Tuesday in serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Medley.
Also hurt were Mr. Ilo B. Klaus and her grandson, Christopher Klaus, 2, passengers with Moore. The little boy sustained a head bump, and Mrs. Klaus an injured jaw. Both were treated at Jasper county hospital and released. Neither Moore, nor his wife, and an identified passenger were injured other than being shaken up.
State police reported that Hall was northbound on U.S. 231 about five miles south of Rensselaer and attempting to pass an unidentified vehicle. After reportedly running a southbound pickup truck off the roadway, the Hall car struck the Medley vehicle.
Mr. Medley, a farmer, was born in Tennessee and had lived in the Remington-Goodland area for 15 years. Mrs. Medley was born in Champaign County, Illinois. Both were members of Trinity Lutheran church, Goodland.
They are survived by two sons, Robert of Sweener and William of Remington, and a daughter, Mrs. Edwin (Phyliss) Byroad of Remington.
Mr. Medley is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Avinell Cain and Mrs. Opal Gentry of Remington, also two brothers, Ray Medley of Valparaiso and Donald Medley of Remington.
Mrs. Medley is also survived by her father, William Budde, Remington; two brothers, Harold Budde of Brook and Robert Budde of Remington and five sisters, Mrs. Ruth Friedll of Chicago, Mrs. Ada Mrock of Branville, Mrs. Margaret Dowmen of Crawfordsville, Mrs. Lorette Mykrantz of Remington, and Mrs. Frieda Holley of Kentland.
The Medley boy was born in Lafayette and is survived by his parents and sister, Sandra.
The Hall youth was born in Watseka, Ill, but lived in Kentland before moving to the Rensselaer area five years ago. He attended Kentland and Jordan grade schools and was graduated last spring from Rensselaer Central high school.
He farmed with his father on the William Ramey farm and was a member of Wesleyan Methodist church, Fowler.
Surviving with the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hall, are two brothers, Steve, at home and Robert of Remington and two sisters, Mrs. Gerald Ropp of Wolcott and Mrs. Donnie Dixon of Pine Village.
Funeral services for the three Medley family victims were to be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Remington Methodist church with Rev. Ronald Goetz officiating. Burial will be in Remington cemetery. Friends may call at the Rushton Smith funeral home, Remington after 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Funeral services were to be held for the Hall youth at the Fowler Methodist church with Rev. William Killian officiating. Interment will be in Fairlawn cemetery, at Kentland. Friends will be received at the Jackson funeral chapel, Rensselaer, presumably Wednesday afternoon and evening.
