Mary was the daughter of Abraham Fast and Catherine Fluke, one of five children. Her parents were natives of Pennsylvania and after their marriage they rode horseback to Ohio, where they settled on a farm. Mary was born in Ashland County, Ohio. Her father died when Mary was a young child.
Mary married William S Alger on 14 May 1878. William was a native of New York and served in the Civil War with Co C 115th NY Infantry.
Mary and William were residents of Villisca, Montgomery County, Iowa for many years. William opened the first bank in Villisca. In 1882 the bank became the First National Bank of Villisca and he was president until 1903.
