One of the purest and sweetest lives that over honored Geneseo township went out Wednesday last, when Mrs. Andrew Speer quietly passed away. She had been in poor health several years, and the past year had gradually failed. For five months she has been bedfast, and the end was not unexpected. This good lady was born in Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, June 20, 1846. She came west with her parents and located first in Illinois, and in 1865 at Princeton, Iowa.
She married Andrew Speer December 25, 1867, and three years later the couple came to Black Hawk county. In 1873 they located in Geneseo township, where they have made their home all the years since. But one child was born to the couple, a son, William A. Speer, a well-known Geneseo farmer. The husband survives, as well as two sisters —Mrs. Ida Van Duzer, of Ames; Mrs. M. Gast, Princeton, Iowa. Both were with deceased at the time of her death and remain for the funeral.
Mrs. Speer united with the church early in life and has always been a consistent, sympathetic and helpful Christian, being a leading member of Geneseo church from its organization. She was imbued with the love and sympathy and unselfishness that characterized Him she served. It was a delight to know her and a privilege to be her neighbor. The funeral is to be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock, at Geneseo church. It will be in charge of Rev. Scheckler, the pastor.
