George's parents moved to Dallas Co., Iowa when he was a boy. He moved to Denver in 1885 where he worked first in a garden plot near Sloan's Lake and then at a sawmill near Huston. In 1888 he started a homestead in the Twentymile country but spent his winters working at the ore smelter in Leadville. He came to Hayden in 1900 where he first worked in the drug store and post office, then opened his own store in 1912. (Extracted in part from his obituary, Steamboat Pilot, Jan. 5, 1950)
