George's parents moved to Dallas Co., Iowa when he was a boy. He moved to Denver in 1885 where he worked first in a garden plot near Sloan's Lake and then at a sawmill near Huston. In 1888 he started a homestead in the Twentymile country but spent his winters working at the ore smelter in Leadville.
