Gorda grew up in the Liberty community of Granville, Jackson County, Tennessee. Her mother died when Gorda was about 14 years old.

Gorda Frances Lambert married John Newton Cantrell on Nov 11, 1906 in Jackson County, Tennessee. Their marriage certificate, however, was obtained in Putnam County, Tennessee, and indicates they were married on 15 Sep 1906. Their children said their parents always gave the 11 Nov date as their anniversary and told them they were married while seated in a buggy by H H Neill, Justice of the Peace.

There seems to be some confusion on Find A Grave about Gorda's siblings and who her parents were. Gorda's mother was Ollie Frances Clemons, born 3 Mar 1849 in Granville, Jackson, TN and died 17 Feb 1905 of pneumonia in Granville, Jackson, TN. She is buried in Curry's Chapel Cemetery beside her husband and Gorda's father, William Thomas Lambert. Although William Thomas did marry after Ollie Frances died, he did not have any more children. There were no half-siblings!

Gorda died at home from a pulmonary embolism due to thrombophlebitis (blood clot) in her leg, a result of a fracture to her tibia and fibula after stepping in a post hole on her farm.
