Doris Maxine Sappington Smith, 75, of Doniphan, Missouri, died Sunday, December 12, 2010, at Southeast Medical Center in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.

Mrs. Smith, daughter of Robert M. and Sara Lee (Jenkins) Cromwell, was born July 17, 1935, in Portageville, Missouri. She had been a Bible Way Minister for 19 years. Mrs. Smith was a singer and guitar player and led her family, known as the Sappington Family, in singing the gospel for many years.

She was first married to James Sappington and he preceded her in death on February 20, 2004. On December 10, 1977, she was married to Robert F. Smith. He preceded her in death on February 6, 1997.

Surviving are eight children; James Nathan Sappington of Marshville, Missouri, Vinita Maxine Sappington, Thomas Wayne Sappington and Michael Anthony Sappington, all of Doniphan, Missouri, Sarah Ann Mercer of Sullivan Missouri, Robert Paul Sappington of Naylor, Missouri, Doyle Eugene Sappington of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, and David Earl Sappington of Naylor, Missouri; 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren; five sisters, Ophelia Romero of Doniphan, Missouri, Robbie Shearer and Jerie Eaton, both of Fredricktown, Missouri, Betty Adcock of Petersburg, Virginia, and Donna Jean Quinn of Richmond, Virginia; and one brother, Robert M. Cromwell, Jr. of Annapolis, Missouri.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, James Sappington and Robert F. Smith, one grandson, Jeremy Wade Sappington and one great-grandchild, Albert Scott McKnight.

Burial will be in the Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery in Fairdealing, Missouri.
