PFC Roland G. Chapdelaine was born on December 5, 1922 in Saint Victoire, Canada. At a young age, he moved to Massachusetts with his family settling in Springfield. He was entered into active service in March of 1943 at Fort Devens, MA. Roland was trained in Camp Lee, Virginia, and air bases in Harvard, Nebraska and Kearns, Utah. An excellent marksman his whole life, he was awarded the Carbine Sharpshooter Badge and had various weapons qualifications from rocket launcher, mortars and tank weapons, to various machine guns. He was assigned to the 28th infantry, 8th Division (Golden Arrow/Pathfinders) and fought as a machine gunner in the Rineland Central European Theater (February-July, 1945) in Germany.
