James Robert Conner 87, of Indianapolis, passed away September 16, 2007.

He was born October 2, 1919 in Indianapolis to William and Hesper Conner.

James served in the Army during WWII. He was a member of the 601 Field Artillery Division fighting in the Aleutian Islands, Italy, France, Sicily, Germany, and Austria. He was one of the last five remaining members in his unit. The 601, in association with the 101st Airborne, helped liberate the death camps and lead the survivors to Brenner Pass. Recently, James was interviewed on the news when he shared a hospital room with a Dachau survivor.

He was a meat packer at Kingan for 13 years, Hygrade, Stark and Wetzel, and Rath Packing. James retired at the age of 85 from the University of Indianapolis after 23 years, where he also received the U of I Honorary Alumni of the year 2005. He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church, the American Legion, and the Loyal Order of the Moose.

His wife, Anna Conner, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his children, Theresa Conner, Dawna Conner-Burrin, Deborah Conner, James Robert Conner II, Joseph Michael Conner, Jerald Thomas Conner, and Angela Padgett; sisters, Norma Lindley, Marjorie Windburn, and Marilyn Freese; 20 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 19, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, with calling there from 11 a.m. until the time of service.

He will be laid to rest in Kadesh Chapel Cemetery in Beech Bottom, West Virginia.
