Col. Reuben Gray, youngest son of John Gray, was born in Florida, Montgomery Co., N. Y., Aug. 15, 1782. Removed to Sherburne, N. Y., with his father's family, in 1793, and married Rebecca Belcher at that place, 1806. He continued to reside in Sherburne until after the death of his mother, in 1824, his parents having made their home with him during the later years of their lives. He served in the war of 1812, as Captain in Col. Mead's Chenango County Regiment, and was afterwords Colonel of a Militia Regiment. That Col. Gray was a man of literary taste and poetic sentiment, as well as a soldier gallant and brave, in whom the fires of patriotism not dimly burned, is evidenced by a few stray leaflets of his composition that have been preserved.
