Edgar L. Abernathy, 62, of Cape Girardeau, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2010, at his home.
He was born Sept. 23, 1948, in Cape Girardeau, son of Glenn W. and Toria E. Strong Abernathy. He and Linda F. Silman were married Feb. 4, 1967.
On Jan. 11, 1968, he was inducted into the United States Army, serving in Vietnam with the 1st Air Cavalry Division Air Mobile Echo Company 2/5. He was honorably discharged Jan. 9, 1970, as a Sgt. E-5 and had been awarded a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart and the Air Medal.
Edgar started work at Forklifts of Cape Girardeau in 1978 and retired due to illness in January 2009. He loved woodworking and working on cars. He also enjoyed bluegrass music, playing his mandolin and watching the St. Louis Cardinals.
Loving survivors include his wife of 43 years
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at McCombs Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield, with the Rev. Donny Ford officiating and with full military honors. Burial will follow in the veterans cemetery.
